Summary

DNF。 I tried, I wanted to like it, but after 115 pages this is what happened (and I promise there are no spoilers):- a young woman falls in love with a guy she just met, she wants to marry him, her parents tell her to wait until he's back from the sea- Sabine goes to visit her grandma and hates it there, until she visits a neighbour and she hates it a bit less- Kate breaks up with her boyfriend because she has a new one- some people like horses, others not so much。115 pages or 1/4 of the book fo DNF。 I tried, I wanted to like it, but after 115 pages this is what happened (and I promise there are no spoilers):- a young woman falls in love with a guy she just met, she wants to marry him, her parents tell her to wait until he's back from the sea- Sabine goes to visit her grandma and hates it there, until she visits a neighbour and she hates it a bit less- Kate breaks up with her boyfriend because she has a new one- some people like horses, others not so much。115 pages or 1/4 of the book for this。 Waaaaaaaay too slow for my liking and I'd say not Jojo's finest or even remotely close。 。。。more

Jojo Moyes has become one of my favorite authors。 This book did not disappoint。。。the setting, the characters, the story。 Families coming to understand the past, explaining behaviors, regretting misunderstandings。 Many families could probably relate。

I have to think about the year that it was written since 20 years later we could definitely trace a lot of slut-shaming。 Other than Kate and Sabine's complex ideals and lack of accountability, I really like Joy's side of the story。 Maybe because I could relate with her conservative and introvert character, her story was tastefully done。 I have to think about the year that it was written since 20 years later we could definitely trace a lot of slut-shaming。 Other than Kate and Sabine's complex ideals and lack of accountability, I really like Joy's side of the story。 Maybe because I could relate with her conservative and introvert character, her story was tastefully done。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It passed the time, and there were bits of it that I really enjoyed, but apart from young Joy (who featured fairly briefly) I didn't particularly like any of the characters。 Kate was just awful - so immature。 Tom was too perfect。 Why would perfect Tom be drawn to Kate? Don't be daft! So it's good, but it's not good。 Can't in fairness give it less than three stars because the author has a good writing 'voice'。 That's my tuppence-worth。 。。。more

Not my favorite of the Books I’ve read by Moyes。 Kind of tedious at times

Stories of everyday people living, for the most part, everyday lives。 I kept waiting for it to get better, to get really caught up in the lives and drawn in。 But I never was。 With so many other good books to read, I would not recommend this one。

Anna Berwitz

I really enjoyed this book。 The reader gets to observe the beautiful unfolding of family truths and secrets, while watching relationships grow and develop。

TouchingThree generations of women and their families。 Trying to live life and please others isn’t always easy or straightforward but it can come right in the end。 A deeply moving tale。

I do love this author and how she strings words together to effectively express emotions。

A solid three stars for an enjoyable read。 Was it as good as “Me Before You”? Not really, but still worthwhile。 Liked the multiple mother daughter relationships。

Fun light reading。

I enjoyed this book。 I also enjoyed the fact that not everyone was nice, but they were loving。 I also liked the fact that the characters didn’t always know themselves。 I think all of us go through that a bit sometimes。 And in the end, most if not all accepted others for who they were, not for who they wanted them to be。 I read some of the other reviews complaining about not being able to like Sabine。 To me, it sounds like they have not raised a teenager。 Being a teenager is a slow, agonizing pro I enjoyed this book。 I also enjoyed the fact that not everyone was nice, but they were loving。 I also liked the fact that the characters didn’t always know themselves。 I think all of us go through that a bit sometimes。 And in the end, most if not all accepted others for who they were, not for who they wanted them to be。 I read some of the other reviews complaining about not being able to like Sabine。 To me, it sounds like they have not raised a teenager。 Being a teenager is a slow, agonizing process for some and it takes a lot of time, experience, and understanding to get through it。 Happy to say my two teens are coming out on the other side the misery and confusion and are well on their way to adulthood。 。。。more

It's like comfort food for the mind。 Be it predictable and ordinary sometimes, that doesn’t diminish the capable and touching storytelling。 The characters are extremely realistic as if it’s mandatory to feel some sort of affinity to some of them with all their shortcomings and internal struggles。 Some of my Jojos ❤This book follows three generations of women; (1) a sulky teenager (Sabine), (2) a clueless mother (Kate), and (3) a tough-outside-soft-inside grandmother (Joy)。 The story kicks off with memories of Joy as a young expat in Hong Kong, then shifts to present tense when Kate sends the unwilling Sabine to spend sometime with her barely seen grandparents in Ireland while she tries to sort out her messed up life in London。 I was more interested in Joy’s life and wanted to know more about it, particularly the history bits。Now let’s set that aside。 I couldn’t understand why make Sabine go too far with Thom who shares history with her mother。 I get that she resented the prospect of a relationship between him and her mom, and a 16 year-old who might have daddy issues is inevitable to crush on older men that are old enough to father her, but that seduction scene? It was awkward, disgusting, and so unnecessary。 Also。。 (view spoiler)[whatever happened with Kate’s half brother? You can't just unveil a secret like that and leave us hanging not knowing about it further。 It was like a hole in the story。 (hide spoiler)]Other than the previous paragraph, it’s a lovely book。 There is dealing with grief, dysfunctional families, irritated-teenager-package, life with horses, a laugh or two, some secrets, and levels of love。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

Was a little disappointed in this book, so much left out for a lot of the characters。 Would have liked more about Joy and Edward, and not a spoiled granddaughter, Sabine。

I started this book a long time ago and set it aside。 The copy I have is thick with small print and the chapters are long, so it took a bit to get into。 But, I did really enjoy it。 It wasn’t quite as good as Me Before You, but I loved the 3 stories of grandmother, mother, and daughter。

I always have great expectations for Jojo Moyes' books because Me before you was an absolute masterpiece and all her other books I've read were very good too, but this one left me with mixed feelings。 Well, it's her debut novel so she obviously got better afterwards。There are actually several storylines in this novel, which was what frustrated me the most。 Although all these storylines are tangled together because they refer to characters that are part of the same family/community and interact a I always have great expectations for Jojo Moyes' books because Me before you was an absolute masterpiece and all her other books I've read were very good too, but this one left me with mixed feelings。 Well, it's her debut novel so she obviously got better afterwards。There are actually several storylines in this novel, which was what frustrated me the most。 Although all these storylines are tangled together because they refer to characters that are part of the same family/community and interact a lot with one another, I still had a feeling of frustration about not delving deeper into any of these character's background story。There's Joy, the grandmother, who has met the love of her life but later realized that married life isn't all butterflies and rainbows。 Kate, her daughter, who idealizes her parents' marriage and is desperate to live her own love story, but all she can get are short-term relationships, with men she doesn't truly love。 Sabine, the granddaughter, forced to spend some time in the Irish farm of her grandparents with all their rigid rules and their love for horses and hunting, which she hates at first, but grows to love with time。 And finally, Annie, daughter of the home help in the farm, who is still mourning the death of her child several years ago。Joy's story was the one I was most curious about, because it ran over many years, and she lived in Hong-Kong in her youth, so I would have loved to see more of the life in this place in the 50s-60s。 Sadly, we only get pieces of her story throughout the book, as she reveals it to her daughter and granddaughter。 Sabine was a nice character that became more and more likeable, but still her story wasn't as interesting as her grandmother's。 I couldn't care less about Kate though。 Annie sounded like she could have been a nice character too, but there was enough with Joy and Sabine's stories already, so hers was more of a side storyline and I didn't get to sympathize with her as much as I could have。All in all, the book isn't bad, I did enjoy it, but frustration still is the main feeling I had when closing it。 I think it would have been better to focus just on one of those women (Joy would have been the better choice) and develop her story deeper。 Still, it was a nice read。 And now I want to visit Ireland ;) 。。。more

Joy and Edward, parents of Christopher and Kate, grandparents to Sabine。 Story started in Hong Kong。 It was frustrating for me, Kate was a mess and Sabine was full of teenage anger。 Kate sends Sabine to Ireland to live with her grandparents。 There were some surprises but I skimmed some and the characters all had a hard time communicating。 I’ve liked other books by JoJo much better。
